Inequality in daily life and the fastest semester ever!

It seemed like it was just yesterday when I came back from Sweden after my exchange. Time passed so fast and half the semester is already over. It has been more than 6 months since my return and I still suffer from withdrawal symptoms. I think I might have developed a bad case of wanderlust. I just want to go around the world and absorb the awesomeness of the world. Haha.

However, I have to say that the modules I am taking this semester are rather interesting. For my major, I am taking HS3007 Religion and Society, HS2008 Inequality and Social Class and HS4001 Qualitative Research. They are all my favourite topics, but I have to say that HS2008 is quite a heavy module for a 2000 level course. I think the content is quite worth the effort though! It is giving me a lot of insights into how inequality manifests itself in the nitty gritty parts of life.

For instance, our consumption of branded goods. Why is it that the people who are struggling to survive with everyday live would still partake in the consumption of luxury goods? I used to have a friend in secondary school who was under the Financial Assistance Scheme. However, when she mentioned that she had a PSP which her mom bought for her, I judged her. Why would she spend such money on a game console when she is under the FAS scheme? One of the readings from Pugh gave me some insights with regards to this. Such symbolic consumption is more than an allocation of monetary resource. My friend's parents partook in symbolic indulgence, to show that they were able to provide their children with material goods. In turn, my friend gets a sense of belonging, a feeling that she had membership with the group. However, I think it backfired on her in this case because I was truly troubled about her priorities at that time. I kept wondering why did she spend the money on the game console. I guess I see it from a different perspective now and I really regret judging her.

HS4001 was more interesting in my opinion. The readings for the module was very interesting, but I think it is not as easy to score. It is not so easy doing an ethnography and my partner and I overlooked some aspects, causing our grades to suffer. However, I am glad that I learnt something from it. We were supposed to write a self ethnography about ourselves. And I thought it would be interesting to share it here. In case I lose the document somewhere along the way, at least there would be a record of it. My self-ethnography also has inequality embedded in it.

"Do you have any staple bullets?" I asked the friend next to me.
She looked at me for a moment, then said, "It is not staple bullets, it is staples. And I don't have any."
At the age of seven, I never felt that there was anything wrong with "staple bullets". My parents called them as such, and I thought everyone used the same phrase to refer to the small metal pieces we used to attach papers together. It was only when I grew older that I realised my linguistic ability marginalised me from most of the school.
I was in a single sex,  mission school. During that time I realised a group of friends and myself were slightly different from the rest of our schoolmates. Most of the students in my school came in through religious or familial affiliation. Unlike the most of my friends, I got in through a stroke of luck. Having only a fifteen percent chance of getting into school through the last phase of balloting,  I got in. Majority of the students of my school came from upper middle class families and students under the financial assistance scheme (FAS) were a rarity. I was not in FAS, but my family was not very well to do either. I would say, I belonged in the lower middle class.
I realised that I had a different level of linguistic ability when I was constantly being picked on by the English teacher and often got my compositions read out loud in class. Not because it was amazing, but because it was an example of a bad composition. Some of my classmates also laughed at some of my mispronounications and never hesitated to correct me while snickering.
In introspect, I realised that my inability to use the English language as well as my school mates was due to a lack of social capital.  I learnt whatever I knew about the language from my mother. However, my mother was not that eloquent in the English language as well, because she came from as chinese speaking family and only started to use the English language when she started working full time. Despite her inability to speak standard English,  she chose to use it as the main language when speaking to my brother and I.
I was not the only one who spoke differently from majority of the school. There were a group of girls who often hang out together in my class because they did not speak in the English language as well as the rest of the school. They often used Chinese when communicating with each other instead. I realised I did not fit in with them either. My Chinese language ability was also limited and I found myself speaking my English while they reply me in mandarin. It was kind of awkward sometimes when they made the effort to reply me in English instead.
That was when I realised that linguistic ability was very strongly linked to the habitus of a person,  the language that one speaks most know a regular basis and how you used the language. This is what bordieu calls habitus. This habitus originates mainly from the household, because young girls usually spend most of their time at home. The linguistic ability of one child is highly dependent on the linguistic ability of the parents. The child linguistic ability becomes a form of social capital in school and also a tool in power relations. The corrections on my usage of the English language in school by my classmates were actually a form of power play where they tried to establosh some form of social hierarchy based on your linguistic  ability. People who were not able to use the English language proficiently were considered more inferior.
I hope you enjoyed reading my mini auto ethnography. Laavy mentioned that we will get back to this when we reach week 11 and I am kind of looking forward to it. It had been a while since I had to write a timed personal recount kind of thing and I really enjoyed it.

Anticipation

AHHH. Everything is finally over. I am finally 21, and I managed to go through my chalet without too much hiccups (Other than the issue with the banner) I still feel that the banner was really pretty, and it was a waste I did not manage to use it, not to mention the high opportunity cost. :( My GPA will probably commit suicide as a result. I just hope that the building it fell off from is a low-rise one and I would be able to undo the damage done when I get back to Singapore. But I have to be really grateful that I have such supportive friends especially Theresa and Josephine. <3 My other friends also helped to take pictures as well. As times like this, I really feel very blessed to have such wonderful friends. Thanks everyone. For coming and helping. <3

That aside, I have to say that I am wayyy too excited for my Swedish trip. I have never been away from home for so long and I think it will be a great learning journey for me. Especially in terms of money and time. While preparing for the trip, I realised how expensive can going on an exchange be.

REALLY EXPENSIVE.

So far, even before stepping out of Singapore, I have already spent S$3000 for the air ticket and other important documents such as residence permit and insurance. -__-||| I have to be really thankful that so far, I have gotten a lot of support(especially financial support) from my parents. I hope to be as frugal as possible during the trip and hope not to be too heavily in debt to my parents. D:

I AM STILL VERY EXCITED.

I am going to be away from home for the longest time I have ever been away from home. AHHH. Talk about independence. Luckily for me, I will be travelling with 12 other people from NTU to Linkoping so I will not be too lonely. ^^ So excited for the exchange especially because I have some of  my clique-mates going with me too. AHHH. Pleasepleaseplease let everything go on smoothly.

I have decided to create a separate blog to document my exchange so that my relatives will be able to see and experience being in Europe with me. I am going to miss my family quite a bit. I am sure.

Stress is good for health. Seriously?

Whoever coined in that phrase is a little crazy. I absolutely detest feeling stressed! It is like sleeping on the floor for 2 nights in a row. You body feels achy and a massage does not help because it is all in the mind!

Boo hoooo.

So many assignment and too little time. I hope that I would be able to finish most of them by this week so that I will have sufficient time to finish studying all my modules for the exam. This semester is especially important because I will have my GPA freezed next semester because I am going for exchange. >.< Plus, I am taking 6 modules! I am crazy. First time taking six modules and I am crying holy mama! Hahaha. That kind of came out a little off.

At this point of time, I really have to be grateful for my fellow coursemates. Since they probably do not know the existence of this blog, I think it would be safe to say that because they are so on the ball, they have influenced me to do the same. If it was me in the past, I think I might keep procrastinating till the last minute. Thanks to them, I have discovered the joy of doing much of my work before the deadline and finding the discipline to do so because everyone else is doing it and you do not want to lose out.

Unfortunately, this stress has shown its side effects again. Craving for fast food is not fun when you are trying to lose weight. My weight loss attempt has been not very successful so far. Sigh o sigh.

To illustrate how studious(relatively) I am, here's a picture of my messy table.

Notes with home made mind-map goodness(I wish)

Anyway, let me sidetrack a bit. SAJC made us do the love language test when I was there for one of the moral education lessons. I love taking these personality tests even though they are not entirely reliable and they can be utterly flawed. It is fun. So I wanted to see if I changed or something, so I did it again, this time online.

Oh look! Not much change! I think I used to be a little higher in words of affirmation, but now I have acts of service standing on equal grounds. Hahaha. Hmmmm. What is to be said from this test?

First week of school after summer holidays

OMG. This is just the first week of school and I already have so much to do! I have to plan for my exchange programme, plan up my deadlines, read my readings for the first week, print the readings and prepare for people's birthdays. >.<

I am just sooo busy.

The worst part is the balloting for the modules. So difficult for me to get my minor module. I did not get it. I am still quite helpless and I am wondering what to do nowwww. :(

Let's hope that all goes well for this semester.

Wish me all the best. *crosses fingers*

Socializin' fun!

So, I said I had another post on my socializing experience right? This is it. Haha. What a bad introduction. Oh well, whatever. ^^

My JC1 classmates and I went back to school for lunch and a quick meet up! It was nice seeing everyone again^^ This picture was my favourite of them all! Although I am not very very close to all of you because we only had one year together, you will be in my heart! My heart has many compartments.

Before Jing Li left for Aussie, we met again at Star Visa and ate Porn's! Not bad, but the Pad Thai was not as good as Nakhon in Kovan. Tom Yum was really good because it was super sour, I like.

Went for Michelle's 21st birthday party with Cheryl. It was nice seeing her again! I wore heels so I am almost their height. Hahahaha. #cheat. Bought her a Herschel bag, fell in love with another Herschel bag, bought it and now it is on its way to Singapore from USA ^^ Much cheaper than buying from the shop in Singapore. It is out of stock anyway. -.- I super love Michelle's dress!

Celebrated Jing Li's birthday at hatched! Speaking of which, I have not bought Jing Li's present! :( She flew over specially to celebrate! Cool only! She looked so pretty that day ^^ I bought my home lighter for the occasion and everyone laughed at me. See my lighter in the picture? It was the big gun looking type. :(

Here is another picture of all of us! <3

Celebrated Jaya's birthday with my fellow guide friends! We are all grown up!

All of us! Not all, but almost!

Added this because it is a nice picture. Hahaha.

The day we collected our HSS packs and helium balloons. Poor Qing lin's balloon flew up into the ceiling during our elective. RIP, balloon. But we got another the next day. I was attempting the helium voice thingie, but there was no difference in my voice. Either I am doing it wrong or it does not work on me. I hope it is the latter. Because then I would be cool. #nonsense Hahaha.

It is only the end of March and but so far this year has been not bad IF you do not include school. School got tougher, I have 4 assignments from 4 different module due soon. I hope I do not explode....-.-

March 30, 2013

Sweet memories ^^

As my projects' and assignments' deadlines zoom in closer and closer, I need to remind myself to set my priorities right. I must really look at my current goal more closely. I WANT TO GO FOR EXCHANGE IN SWEDEN SEM 2 2014!!! I just wrote this on my wall big big! Oh well. Sucks that we place such an importance on meritocracy.

We work hard, so we must play hard too. Today was an eventful day, but I want to write about the whole of March in general. March flew by really quickly. I always have the motivation to blog when something happens, but you know, I procrastinate. :/

I am really grateful to have such nice friends in my course. I never expected it to be this way. When I went for Welcome Day in NTU alone, I thought I might really be a loner and my worse fear would come true. Instead, we had our own  loners' table and now.....we have a group of people who have a shared understanding and things to talk about all the time. Having been in a mission school almost all my life(nursery, primary school, secondary school and junior college), this is the first time I find myself not surrounded any Christians. It is a little weird, and yet interesting. My horizons really became broader. Apart from the religion shock, I think the conversation subject that ALWAYS pop up never fail to shock me.

WHY ARE WE ALWAYS TALKING ABOUT GUYS HUH?

So weird! I am talking about conversations about marriage, kids, spouses and what not. Super weird! Hahahaha. But I enjoy talking about who fangirls over who and who is the best fangirl material. Hahahaha. I once asked them to change the topic, and Phyllis said," But we are girls! " Well, I certainly hardly ever talked about guys in my other schools before 0.o Weird. I tend to keep quite quiet in those HTHT sessions. No comments and not really in a position to comment.

This post was supposed to be for me to showcase some of the things I did. I sidetracked. -.-

I had my recess week 2 weeks ago, but it was really eventful^^

Homemade Tom Yum with glass noodles with tomatoes, xiao bai cai, corn and egg. The stick there is lemongrass. I am not a big fan of it, but it makes Tom Yum nommy. Nom. This was on my stay home day.

120313 - Kiseki with Fried Brains! Best gathering with almost full attendance! We went for Japanese buffet and then to Playnation to play Kinect! <3 I stole all these pictures from Facebook, but I am sure the rest will not mind ^^

Fried brains (almost) family picture!

After Kinect, everyone was exhausted, sweaty and probably not as nice-smelling. We enjoyed it though! <3 Look at my tired face and my unevenly sized eyes.. Hahaha.

So tired that when I went to Nex afterwards, I told my brother to carry my heels while I walked in slippers. Hahahaha. ^^ Thanks bro!

150313- Disney on Ice with Lynette! <3 We ate The basement (again!) But I loved it. Met up with Josephine for a wee bit! Missed her lots! Even though we are in different schools, I hope that we will keep in touch and meet up regularly:) Must make the effort okay! Really love Disney on Ice! This year's theme was Princesses and Heroes. <3 Ariel had quite a bit of spotlight, so I loved it! Stupid bottle leaked and flooded my bag(for the XXXth time). I am always so clumsy >.<

35 baby fishes died. :( RIP, dear little ones. I missed you and loved you while you lasted. I hoped that at least one would live. But alas, it was not meant to be.

Got my HSS pack with a Helium balloon:)Found out that balloons are really nice to write on with my Zebra pen! <3

Japanese buffet again with family! <3 I love salmon, but my prof just informed me that it is not environmentally sound to eat them. 1 kg of salmon requires 6 kg of other fishes to rear. *sniffles*

Bought foot peeling mask to try. OMG. FEET PEELED LIKE CRAZY. Not like thin layers of skin coming out you know. It was a thick layer! My feet is in the last stages of peeling. I bought this Nature's Republic foot mask from Bugis. $9.90 with discount. Hehe.

Went to La De Creme with my sociology friends for a friend(s) date today! Hehe. 3 pots of tea, 1 cup of roasted almond latte, 4 desserts. It was good. I loved the round white with chocolate flakes cake the best!

Another picture.

We were going to Vanessa's house to play Kinect (Thanks Vanessa!) And she so kindly drove us from the train station to the cafe and on to her house! Even lent me her shower! Thank you so much, my friend! So I fed her the last piece of cake. My favourite one! Genevieve. It has praline, crunchy something and special cream that is so good that even someone like  me who hates cream ate it. Okay la. Just kidding. I ate the last piece. This was just a pose! :p

A picture of all of us who went! I am in an odd position, but who cares. I decided to wear my saints shirt to dance because I felt like it. ><

I still have more pictures I have not talked about yet! OMG. When did I get a life, seriously. Hahaha. Oh well. It was really fun! Maybe it was fate Vanessa's doggies were not at home. I am afraid of dogs(yes, I admit it) I want to overcome that fear though. I will. *determined*

That's all. I will talk about the rest again in another post. This post is long enough as it is! >.<

February 07, 2013

A post because I cannot sleep.

I cannot sleep! I was so sleepy the whole day dozing off in my lecture and in the car! But now, when I am supposed to be sleeping, I am suffering from insomnia! So much for more sleep for better skin -.-

School had been terrifying lately. This semester brought me to the world of clicker quizzes which is a pain in the arse! You have a time limit for the questions and the questions AREN'T easy! They account for some percentage of the final grade. I have a mini heart attack EVERY TIME. God. Reading the readings does not help. Last week, I did not read the readings, I got 3 wrong. This week, I read and I was confident that I would because it was sampling and I learnt it in JC and I STILL got 3 wrong. TELL ME HOW!

Technology ain't always the best thing for your grades. No no.

On the other hand, I think my coursemates and I have bonded more after one semester together! We understand more about each other's quirks and stuff (okay, I admit, it is more like my unique nature they have gotten used to.) Look! The best thing about university? Photo booths with pro cameras when they have an event! We are going again tomorrow to take more photos. Haha.

The module I am taking, BS8003, Science or Fiction: Biology in Popular Media, makes Wednesdays the best day of the week even though I have a 0930 lecture. I look forward to the 2 hour break when we go explore NTU's many canteens. Haha. ^^ I recommend this module to anyone looking to clear their STS GER-PE. I am a anti-sci-fi person, but I have started to look forward to weekly movie screenings! I swear, this is the only lecture where majority of the course people would turn up in because they wanna watch the movie in the LT. Attendance is not even taken and the lectures are recorded. My coursemates and I have to go to the lesson at least 20 minutes early or we would not be able to find enough seats for the 5 of us! (YES, I convinced many people to sign up for the same electives as me!)

Oh, did I tell you I was late for lecture this morning? I am so silly. I overshot my train to Boon Lay and Pioneer and ended up in ulu Joo Koon. This is really bad. I make all the efforts to be on time and still be late. Might as well sleep on my lovely bed for 10 more minutes and arrive in school at the same time.

Oh, I was just thinking if I should use a passive or active voice when writing on my blog. Technically speaking, since I am "writing" it and not "saying" it out aloud, I should use the passive voice. But it sounds so formal at times that I will no longer sound that what I sound like! Get my dilemma? I wished people still used picture language(or whatever it is called) to save me from using excessive brain cells by complicating life with grammar.

What else have I been doing? Oh. I have been telling people I don't fancy roses. I really don't! They are so overrated and too mainstream! I don't think flowers are a good use of money. They do not do anything but to look elegant and unapproachable and expensive. They have thorns and they die easily. My favourite kind of flowers? Definitely baby's breath. I am pretty sure the real baby's breath does not smell so pretty. It would probably smell like bad milk after all the sugars have been broken down by the amylase in the saliva and it becomes plague, suffocating and killing the teeth. Sorry, I just bio-ed a little. Anyway, it is often placed together with other flowers like roses or daisies or whatever. They are always overlooked! But they are actually so fluffy looking and happy looking and so wild! Looks like what freedom would be if it was a flower. I love it.

http://ginsoakedolive.blogspot.sg/2010/05/babys-breath.html

Anyway, I was going to sleep just now when my dad called me out of my room to tell me that the one or more of the mollies that we bought gave birth to baby mollies! *squeals* So I went take them out from the main tank to separate them from the adults so they will not get eaten. There were 35 of them. Either two mollies gave birth, or that was one mama preggo (ref. popcap game, insaniquarium) or two mollies were pregnant. I tend to chose fishes that looked pregnant because I was always so fascinated about it and always wanted to see my fishes give birth! I haven't got the chance to see it yet though. Spy the fishies! They look like little dots!

Okay, that's all for today.

I hope that my excitement has waned off and I can finally rest my body.

Ciao! Bonne nuit!

End of first semester in Uni!

YAY! I am finally done with the first semester of university! It has been a tiresome 14 weeks, with chionging of essays and hand-ache from the final exams! I am finally done! Even though I am not too optimistic about the results of my final exams, I am still happy that it has ended. I left for Bangkok the next day, so I just reached back in Singapore yesterday.

Bangkok was sort of fun, yet I felt that it was sort of a wasted trip. I know that this trip was for my grandparents. So I am not to expect much shopping or whatever. So it was more of a leisure trip. I rather eat the cheaper street local food than going to the restaurants though. But because we were with my grandparents, we had to eat "better" food. We went to this supermarket seafood restaurant. It was like consuming a novelty good that is quite useless. :/ We had to choose what you what to cook, supermarket style, and then you choose how you want to cook your food. But it is sooo expensive! You pay $10 for 1 kg of cockles. You can buy 3 times that amount for the same price at Geylang Serai. Furthermore, you have to pay more money for them to cook it the style you want. Steamed, deep-fry, stir-fry etc, etc. Even cutting of fruits require money. HAHA. What a waste of money that can be used for shopping.

The best place to shop seem to be Platinum, the fashion mall. I super like the thing there. But I only had 2 hours at the place. So haiz. I think the quality of clothes in Thailand is much better than Guangzhou, and the price is also about there. So ya, I think can go there to shop again next time! I only bought 2 tops, 2 shorts, 1 pair of slipper wedges and 1 cardigan. Hmmmm. I am not a big shopping queen. Haha.

I have been back for 1 day and I made an anklet and bracelet already. Hahaha. I am so productive when it comes to crafting. So naughty much? Okay. I have to credit myself for grabbing a copy of "The Economist" which my tutor recommended we read for free before boarding the plane. HAHA. $12.50 saved. Shiok only. Haha.

I miss my Phad Thai and Tom Yum already. :( I also liked the chicken skin there.

Okay. That's a really quick update on Bangkok. I enjoyed my trip to the temple! Erawan is a must go for me. Must ask god for blessing before proceeding on with your trip^^

Ciao!

Rebecca:)

Sociological humour.

Well, for those who are not aware, I am studying sociology as of now, 22/11/12, 1417 Singapore time and I keep getting distracted. So I might as well write another blog post. Sociology has changed the way I see the world. Not necessarily for the better, because I have started finding humour in everything. Humans are so funny. We are so funny that as a human, I should not laugh, but I cannot help myself. I have this amazingly surprisingly humorous textbook called "The Practical Skeptic" It just hits all the right notes in me and I can clearly see the author's points and sense of humour.

For example, the funny why we see ourselves and others. We see ourselves through our looking glass. What we do is highly dependent on what others will see in us when we do it. George Herbert Mead's "me" and "I", I can understand totally. The "me" controls my "I". For example, "I" have a freaking itchy mosquito bite on my arse cheek, "I" badly want to scratch it. But "me" knows that that would be social suicide, so in the end, I gritted my teeth and resisted the urge #truestory. Hahahaha. Hahahaha. Don't judge la. You know it happens. So it set me thinking. Why do we even have this silly "me"? Wouldn't it be better if we didn't? Has it got to do with Adam and Eve? Before Eve ate the apple, I supposed she did not have a "me". That's way they were not aware of their lack of clothes? Hahahaha. Can you imagine how funny the world would be if their was only a "I" and no "me"s in the world? No removal of armpit hair(ewww!), no aesthetic surgeries or whatever(crooked teeth for everyone) and even picking your nose in public. Hahahahaha. Does anyone see my sense of humour? Or do you think I am plain weird now? Hahaha. I cannot stop giggling to myself. This is just one example. I also came across funny statements while studying for sociology or doing research. Some really kept me laughing and laughing.

Here is one from the Straits times, The Singapore newspaper about mammogram. (October 28, 2007 Sunday) [Can I do away with the wacky citations on my blog?] I was doing research for my cancer assignment, a perfectly not-funny-at-all topic. Then I saw........

"You'd think science would have advanced beyond clapping a bun-like boob between two plates, turning it into a pancake-like plinth, but there we are."

HAHAHAHAAHAHAHA. Funny? I know it is not funny in the sense that it is a recommended test to test for breast cancer, but if you look at the style of expression that the writer used.....HAHHAHA.

Okay. That's a short post for now. 1439 now. Maybe I will keep tabs on what funny things I see while doing my sociology, and post here once in a while so I can come back and laugh. Seriously, this blog can be a really funny joke sometimes. Other than the serious crafty parts, of course! *wriggles brows* Hehehehe.

That's all. Ciao, everybirdy.

Rebecca ;)

P.S. Back to Singapore in Transition. FYI, Singapore was not a fishing village before Raffles. HA! You don't say?
P.S.[2] Should this post be put under the school label? Hmmm. *undecided and indecisive*
Okay la. Put. Bacause I am a kiasu Singaporean.

November 21, 2012

My alma mater, for charity, patience and devotion.

Well, my alma mater just turned 170 years old on the 16th November. Although I am not in the school any more, I will always see St. Margaret's as my school, forever and always. I will always be proud of my polka-dotted uniform. Omg. As I was googling for a good picture of our dear uniform, I found this picture.

Guess what! The FIRST thing I noticed was the HANDWRITING! :) You know whyyyyy? This picture was drawn by my dear friend! Yes, my friend, I can recognise your handwriting! <3 Surprise surprise! Hahahahaha. That's why I love my friends. I know they are people who will stand up for whatever they believe in. ^^ Although I am sure my school uniform was not as form-fitting as it looks in the picture, this is a good picture to explain why we LOVE our school uniform! :p I felt our unity as a school at it fullest when the newspaper reported our school as the one with the "uncool" uniform. Everyone was so offended by the article. Our school uniform should be the coolest! (I insist!)

It seems like yesterday when I was still in school. But my memories of my dearest school seems to be fading away slowly, but surely. My deepest impression was me not studying, reading 3 novels a day, going to the library 3 times a week and still managed to do relatively well. I do not know how did I do that. I am amazed at myself. I also remember getting third (last) in class in secondary one and jumping to the 2nd in class in secondary two because I jumped from the better than average class to the last class. Haha.Yes, they had rankings in our report books :( But I think I always seem to perform better in lousy classes. Same in primary school. I was in the average classes (3C, 4C) and was average. Then, I went to 5B and yay! Got 2nd in class. Missed the chance to go up on stage to collect my book prize (The Indian in the cupboard and When Hitler stole pink rabbit) because I went to Denmark. Unfortunately, as much I loved the former book, I never got enough interest to read the latter (Sorry Rachel, not really into war) This means a lot though. Because I usually only read books by females or when the main characters are females. The latter book had a girl with a pink rabbit toy and I picked it up first. But I never got past the first chapter(I think. Or was it the first couple of pages?) HAHA. Ahhhh. As I am writing this, the memories come gushing back in bits and pieces. The reading book list for the school holidays always had books from the Amber Brown series on it   and my Primary 6 English teacher's "advocation" for the Anne of Green Gables and my subsequent love for the series because I can totally relate to her(Anne)! Secret: I never liked my Primary 6 English teacher because of the time she read my awful composition in class as an example of what NOT to do. :( I also remember that the girl's name in the composition was Laura. D:

The games I played with my primary school friends. The stamp game, where we had to write letters and  purchase stamps....we had wages and jobs. I was the post(wo)man. Hahahaha. And the secret tunnel game with Rebecca (My best friend for the majority of my primary school life) Hahahaaha. I remembered we imagined that there was a tunnel under our houses and we can find each other in the tunnel! We did this tunnel thingie over the phone! HAHAHA. OMG. Memories! I used to spend HOURS on the phone. Now, the maximum time seems to be 15 minutes. I guess people these days lost the interest of talking to just one person on the phone. They rather talk to two or more on the internet...:( I should do more of these posts so that one day when I have dementia, I can come back and read all my stories and laugh to and at myself. HAHA. I also remember the sad times, me crying over the quarrel I had with Rebecca and the sadness I felt when we drifted apart. Like really really drifted apart. I feel the same way with all of my friends. It is so sad that no matter how close you are, you will drift apart one day. Even if you keep in contact, you will never reach the same closeness you had when you were closer. Because you no longer experience the same thing. You cannot. Because time does not rewind. I cannot say much for those with BFFs, because I do not have one. But I am sure no matter how close you are, there are times you feel this way too. :s

This post is getting too solemn. My hopes for everyone is that we remain true to our friends. Keep our friendships as real as possible. Make friends with people who really accept you for who you are. Not with the most popular or the prettiest. Even though at this point of my university life, I feel like I have not found any real kindred spirits yet, I remain positive that the future will surprise me with some. (Actually, that is quite tough to do because I am really quite a queer person.) But one can always hope.

For charity, patience, devotion let's be known,
these qualities St Margaret's shown,
On which our school has grown.

Yes, I typed it out by memory, then checked with the school official website to make sure I was correct. Haha. Only a minor mistake. Not bad right!

At this point of time, I just finished looking through the school's revamped website and realised that many teachers have changed. Ms Kee, whom I met on the bus that day, was not on the list any more. As I looked through the teacher's names, some got married (my girl guides teacher) and some left. I teared. The song that was running through my head was this:

The theme song of The Land Before Time. I just feel sad. All the times that went past, the good and bad. I can never go back again, the carefree times. I just feel like holding on to all my friends and hope that we will never lose contact with one another like my parents and their friends(most anyway). One can hope that with social media, people will put more effort into keeping in contact.

So, that's enough sentimental stuff for one day. My hope is that one day, someone will look at the star I left behind and remember that I was there. Even if I did not get to wear the green robe in the end, I was the 49th in school for O levels Okay!

Ciao!

Rebecca *smiles sadly*

Things are looking up:)

Well, I am really happy to say that Rebecca is not as lonely anymoreee! Yippee! However, she is suffering from a horrible backlog of readings and catching up with school work so I decided to make a little picture post to you know, cover the really sad post about me being lonely. Not a lot have been going on lately though. I spent absolutely too much time on public transport, it is crazyyy. Palau NTU is awfully far away! Boo-hoo!

So, let the pictures begin!

For those who are not aware, I am going to share a space with my friend at a FLEA! So exciting! I have been thinking hard about what I wanna sell:) I will be showing you pictures of the things I made to sell! Hehe.  The bracelets above, I really like the one on the furthest right! Almost tempted to keep it for myself!!!I am still looking for places that sells nice beads. Especially big wooden bead so that I can crochet on them.

Dust plugs! These thingies are in trend right now, but I do not really like using them because I use my phone for music and I plug my earphones in and out all the time. But if you do not, these are really pretty phone candy! I personally like the cake ones! So cute!

Pizza at Pitchstop with my coursemates at NTU at the innovation centre because Canteen B was just too crowded! 12" pizza sells for $18, no GST, no service charge. GOOD? Yes. This is roasted turkey beast. Nomnom.

I missed this! Ice-cream from my grandpa! YUP! My grandpa sells ice-cream! Nomnom. But he is growing old, I am really worried for him. :( I hope he can still sell ice-cream for a few more years even though he is 72 years old because this was what enabled my grandparents to bring up all 6 of my aunties and uncles. My grandparents probably had very good money management.

YESSS! I finally bought my Sailormoon because Kinokuniya was having their 20% sale that day!

Original price: $143
Price paid: $115

Prices here rounded off to the nearest integer. Hehe.

Although I know I could probably get it cheaper off Amazon, but I do not know why, this feels more satisfying! :p I will definitely buy off Amazon for my next one though.

Finally passed my Final Theory Test! YAY! I cannot wait to go for my practical test!

Okay, so that's all for today. I need to go mack to my readings now. I promise I will update you on what I am making for the flea! It is on the 23rd September at *scape :p If Atrina reads this, thank you so much for accommodating me!

Rebecca :)

P.S. I have a presentation tomorrow and I have not prepared for it sufficiently yet. OMG >.<  Wish me luck!

Being lonely alone.

From google,

lone·ly/ˈlōnlē/

Adjective:
  1. Sad because one has no friends or company.
  2. Without companions; solitary: "passing long lonely hours looking onto the street".
I have not been blogging or crafting much. Life have been very hectic lately with me attempting to find my way around school, trying to make new friends and coping with printing so many readings and notes and struggling to read and understand them before the tutorials.

I enjoyed my lessons, but I also realised that I am really spending a lot of time travelling to and back from school. My days becomes significantly shorter. I have so little time for myself. My attempts at reading on my way to school had been very unsuccessful so far. The train is so noisy and I get distracted so easily that I cannot even think while reading. Reading an intellectual piece on the train is very different from reading a novel. Novels are usually written in simple English and it does not require much thinking to understand what the authors are trying to get to in the book. The fact that it is highly entertaining helps too. Reading a reading for school is actually very painful for me even though I am really interested in whatever the author is saying. I have to be next to the computer to be able to Google whatever words I do not comprehend. There were so many words I did not know! I feel so stupid. I do read non-fiction from time to time. But this, it really takes some getting used to. I am really desperate to do well this time, so I believe I can actually pull through this. I have to.

The real problem I have now is a problem that I have never encountered in my school life. Maybe I am lucky that way. I have been so sheltered in my little bubble that I just do not know how to cope with reality. I had a best friend in primary school. We went everywhere and did everything together till we finally separated into different classes in the last year. Being immature kids we were, our friendship slowly dissolved into nothingness. It was all right, because I met one of the people I cherish till today. Transition from primary school to secondary school was pretty easy because my school was affiliated and almost everyone went to the same school. Same old faces, some new faces, really easy to adapt to. It was also one of the happiest times in my 20 years of existence in the world. I was literally saying "HI" to everyone in my cohort, it is almost funny now that I think of it. Maybe secondary school was not as happy as I thought it was. I was a naive and immature person. I probably thought everyone was a nice person. But their reactions when we meet again in university tells me otherwise. Some pretended not to see me, some said hi and we caught up, promising to see each other for lunch and more catching up. I am not going to think too much into it because I really want my secondary school life to be "the happy time of my life". Junior college was okay, I guess. As I said, it is a painful reminder of my failure at the same time it give me a lot of opportunities to learn things outside the restrictive education system we have here. Friendship was quite easily made because of the small class size and timetable. Whether the friendship is real, only time will tell. I mean, I can miss my classmates all I want, but do they reciprocate the feelings I feel? No one truly know except themselves. Effort has to be made to keep the friendship going. Time taken out to meet your friends, the things you say when you meet, do you really say what you mean? Or do you just talk about superficial stuff? I find myself guilty of doing a lot of the latter. "How are you?", "I am doing fine. You?", "How's school?" It become difficult to talk about your problems because you know they have their own, or they may not be interested, or they would not understand, or some other excuses we give ourselves.

My opinion? I think most people do not really share their problems because it is a sign of weakness. That we are not what we may portray ourselves to be.Everyone knows that everyone has problems. But it is a different matter altogether if we are to show our weaknesses. We only show it to the closest of friends, a confidante or your girl/boyfriend. I regret to say that I do not really have anyone. Not that I never tried, it is just that they would tell me not to worry, I am a nice person, not one will leave me behind yada yada. How I wish it was so. No one really listens. I really really envy those people who have a best friend at this point of time. I wish there was someone, just someone.

I feel like I am trapped in this void of loneliness. When I feel lonely, I will tend to withdraw from people. Everyone else seem to be having a good time. I would really hate to dampen their moods with my problems. Even as I withdraw, their lives do continue and it may cause us to drift apart and that would mean that I am even lonelier. It is really a vicious cycle. It is really okay when I was working. I had my handicrafts to accompany me and I was not really up and about so I was oblivious to the people around me. The painful truth was really obvious in school now when I see people in group and I walk alone. Even when I had friends, I feel like I am clinging on to them too much or that they are just people I walk with because. Not really friends, not people I can connect with. School becomes quite painful to be in. Being afraid to walk into a lecture theatre late because I am afraid that I would sit alone because there is no one to save a seat for me, always wondering if there are people to eat lunch with because everyone seems to have their own friends to eat with and taking a 1.5 hour trip back home to eat lunch when I have a straight lesson from 1130 to 1430 and when I go home it is already 1615 and I eat lunch on front of my laptop. My self esteem and confidence is really really at an all-time low. It is so scary. I am so terrified of what my life in school will be like.

I think I am already putting in a lot of effort. I never knew retaining in school would have this leftover effect of not knowing anyone at all because they are not from your batch. I know this is supposed to come naturally to me because I am supposed to be an extrovert, but it is just not happening! Is it me? Am I that unlike-able? I really hope not. I always wonder what do people think of me. Maybe it just takes time.

I just hope that I find my kindred spirits soon.

This is just a little something I doodled. The head seems to be a little small though. I made a reference actually. But I lost the page:/ Background from here.

I hope that my next post will be a happier one.

First day of school, a new start.

Well, I had my first day of school today. Granted, all I did was to have a two hour lecture but I think I get the idea of how school is going to be like.

I will not be as easy as I thought it would be and it might even be very tough. But I want to have the strength to excel as I have never done before(obviously I have never been a very bright student). I want to have the motivation to keep going. I have no excuses any more. This is it. The course that I wanted to go. I am here. The future really depends on me. I really really do not want to screw this up. I am going to write this post here to remind myself of the goal I want to achieve. This is really it. My last chance at excelling in education. I am not some smartass genius who absorbs like a sponge. I have to put in a lot of effort. I am not a bean sprout which will germinate easily. I am most probably a durian seed. I take a lot of time and effort before I bear fruit. It sounds quite sad. But I am sure the end will be worth the effort!

I actually have a lot of fears with regards to going to school. Finding new friends is on the top of the list. Most know I have this stupid lonophobia thingie. I have a phobia of eating alone, being alone in a crowd. It scares me to no end. As I organize my timetable, I wonder who will I have my lunch with. I was really lucky to have such amazing friends in SAJC. Especially when I retained, I was left behind when my entire cohort moved on. People I know and felt comfortable with carried on with life as I struggled. Luckily I found such good classmates that held me together at that point of time. It must have been karma. Because of that, I always make a point to approach loner people and make the first move to say hi so they would not be so lonely. Been there, done that, hate the feeling. I really hope to find a group of friends who will accept me for my weird ways and we can have lunches together^^

I was so overwhelmed by the vast amount of people in school. Being in school feels like I am in a marketplace where the whole of Singapore is there. NTU is so big. I was unprepared for the 33,500 people in there. Okay. 33,499 because I am one. Haha. Just kidding. These numbers are probably estimates. It is just the first week of school. I wonder how is it going to continue.

I really want to enjoy school life. Jc was not a really happy place for me because it is such a stark reminder of how I failed. I hope very much to enjoy myself in my last leap of my education. Please.

That's all the rambling I have today. I hope that I will read this one year later and smile because I am doing well and found kindred spirits. ^^

Wish me all the best and cross fingers for me. Ciao!

Rebecca:)

Post A levels. An experience I will never forget.

Well. It is July now. I have stopped studying and have not been studying officially for 7 months. This time of my life feels so happy and carefree. I will never forget this period of my life ever. Of course, you might say, " You lie!!!! You have a 4 GB memory. Your memory failllll!" Well, guess what! I am gonna record all down in this blog so I will never ever forget. HAHAHA! Beat that. Okay, that was a very weird self conversation. :P

My last A levels paper was on the 3rd of December. I did not work till the 10th of Janurary at Starhub as a Customer Care Consultant A.K.A Call agent. I worked there till the 28th of Feburary. That's 2 months. It was a really interesting job I guess. Understanding how a Telco company worked was enlightening for me. I did my best to serve all the different customers and OMG. Can you just imagine? I answer phone calls every day without actually knowing how the person on the other end looks like? My imagination went wild! *stereotyping alert* Oh well. I heard(never met) mean customers, nice customers, weird customers, auntie customers. Interesting. I enjoyed the pay and the stress(just a bit). I decided to leave the company in the end. Of course I made up an excuse about hating the job and the timing was bad and yada yada. But I know the ultimate not-so-nice truth. I was afraid. Results for A-levels was on the 2nd of March. The people who worked there were also getting their results on the same day. I did not want to go back to work teary-eyed and face the customers who may not know and hear them rant. I might just break down and cry. This sounds mean. I know. But if I wanted to provide quality service(and I think I do) I better do it when I am a happy person. All that was left when I left was this:-

Don't belittle this.
You may think it was just two books. No. It is filled with very confidential information which I feel very uneasy having around the house I went to shred it ASAP. It is gone now. I am glad. No responsibilities.

I took a very long break after that. No a very happy break though. I was worrying and worrying about what I was gonna do in the near future. I did not get sparkling grades. Very very not very nice grades. I cried. I ranted. I did blog about the really really sad me. But god was kind and he probably knew I was made to do something. So he made me wait then give me something I was very thankful for.

2 out of 3 acceptance letters
I went for so many interviews! OMG. I really hated interviews before and never never did it officially before. But I did so many interviews, for jobs and school in this period! I was called up for the nursing interview first. That was where I sort of proclaimed my love for Sociology and bah. I knew I could probably make it as a nurse but that was not my PASSION. Then I thought maybe god wanted me to be more selfless and care for people. I am actually okay with that. Blah blah. Then NUS faculty of science called me up for a discretionary interview. I really really really did not wanna do science, but beggars cannot be choosers so I went. And there, the profs asked me a few questions and decided I was not a science student and we started chatting about Sociology instead. Awesome? Not really a good sign. Waste of my time because I was late and could not find the place. Then, after my interview at night....I got a call from NTU asking me to go for the SOCIOLOGY interview. I was like, "......OMGOMGOMGOMG!!! AHHH" Is this a scam? Was that one of my friends calling me? I don't think universities call you up for interviews on the next day! I was supposed to start work at my new workplace on that day and then they called me up. Damn. Bad crash of dates because I already moved back my first day of work because of the NUS interview. Whatever. MY future was more important because it will be for me. Lucky, my reporting officer(RO) was really nice about it so for my first day of work all I did was to eat breakfast, say hi to people whose names I did not remember(I did in the end) and leave for NTU where I was 1 hour early. I did the writing test. OMG. So difficult! More difficult than GP! I did not really understand what it was talking about? But vaguely know what was the gist? OMG. I was so unsure of myself. Baddd. I did my best with my rusty have-not-written-full-sentence-since-my-last-paper mind and prayed really really hard. You cannot give me a bowl of udon and only give me one strand of noodle. IT IS NOT ETHICAL! Haha. I did an one-to-one interview with a professor. That was when I felt really stupid. I thought I do read a lot of news(through my newsfeed on twitter), but he owned me. Flat. He gave me so many perspectives I was so enlightened that day.

Imagine my relief when I got the acceptance for Sociology. Phew. I was really very thankful. I got the acceptance for Nursing a few days later, but I knew. I knew where I wanted to go. SMU rejected me flat down. But I was like, okay....stuck up uni. Boo you. It was not even a "sorry to say, but you did not make it" letter. It was a "too many students applied and you did not make it" :( Boo.

I sealed my fate with this.

Can you imagine? I wonder if someone ever clicked on the last one accidentally. Boo.

Thank you.
I was relieved to see this. Phew. I secured my next 4 years of study.

So I happily went to work at NCS. It was such a big company. I was impressed and amazed. I met wonderful IT people there and leveled up in IT savviness. I was the IT person. Whooo! Haha. I remoted and remoted and remoted into the servers! Whoops! It was magic, I tell you! I did not know what I was doing most of the time, but it was brainless. click click. Type. Excel excel excel. Ctrl+C, Ctrl+V,Ctrl+Z, Ctrl+A, Ctrl+S, Alt+f4. OMG. My excel ability leveled up the most. I met Kar Luen, Henry, Lwin, Cassandra, and many others. They were so nice to the temp staffs(Xing Juan and I) I was astonished my the lack of people with chromosomes XX over there. But I guess I got used to it a little. Did not talk much though. They spoke mainly Chinese. Haha. I am a little amused at how they would speak in Chinese to everyone but me. I wanted to say it is fine! I can understand Chinese perfectly. I just don't really speak in Chinese! But okay. I was there from 3rd May to 13 July. 2 months and 10 days. On the second last day of work, we got a farewell lunch at Nippon village. Free food :P Carolyn, the admin staff upstairs got us Swarovski pens on behalf of everyone in EMS. Touched was I :") It was pink.

I don't think I would bear to use it.

Awesome butterfly paper for the awesome lab people.
I wrote them a note. I think you can read it if you zoomed in.
Xing Juan and I
My nose is awfully round here. Seedy picture by lousy front camera and yellowish tint for a reason.

Nasi Lemak, because I missed the Curry Chicken for the 2nd time.
Second last meal at the Bistro. Where Xing Juan's cousin's cousin works. Haha. Remember when we first went there, we forgot to take our drinks. After talking for a while we realised we were supposed to get our drinks when we ordered our food. So funny. Luckily the auntie helped us.

I will miss having Milo drinks in the afternoon. OMG. EMS lab(where I worked) was so coldddd! I wore an orange jacket, cardigan and and top and jeans and still feel cold. I use my right hand to use the mouse and stick my left in the pocket 90% of the time.

So ya. End of working life and going back to school life in a while. I have orientation camp next week. A little worried about what they might make I do, but excited to see Penny again. Penny power! Haha. God must have sent her to me:D Because she was the only other person who was in NTU and she gave me so many tips and help I do not know how to repay her! Thanks Penny! <3 you lots!  Because you helped me, you have accumulated good karma^^

So ya. That's about the end of what I wanted to tell you for this post. It ended up like a grandmother story. Heheheh. Sorry lah! I long-winded can? Singlish overload!!! Singlish can be quite awesome. Blah. :P

Okay. So that's really all for today. Ciao!

Rebecca:)
